CAN HVAC FILTERS STOP CORONAVIRUS?

At this point, the whole world knows what COVID-19 means-- pandemic, quarantine, isolation, and social distance are just a few of the terms that have become common since this virus took everyone by surprise.

A few months ago, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that Coronavirus can be spread by small particles suspended in the air, rather than only through droplets emitted when coughing or sneezing, as previously thought. This news put Air Conditioning Systems (HVAC) in the spotlight around the world, especially because closed systems that recirculate air can propagate the virus. HVAC manufacturers quickly began making modifications to help prevent spreading Covid in closed indoor settings. As a Rheem Pro Partner, Comfort Air has been on the front lines of this fight, helping individuals and businesses upgrade their systems to improve indoor air quality and combat the virus.

Property managers are rushing to update HVAC systems to try to counter the spread of the virus. Construction specialists are also studying heavy-duty filters that block microscopic particles. They are even considering whether it's possible to install ultraviolet lights or electrically charged particle systems in the ducts to kill the virus.

A study carried out by researchers at the University of Oregon found virus presence in 25% of the HVAC systems in hospitals that treated patients with COVID-19. The conclusions suggest the potential for shared airborne transmission from locations separate from the infected person, although not all experts agree. Many are more concerned about people returning to buildings with poor air circulation, which contributes to the virus remaining in a room.

A joint evaluation of research and experience has shown that HVAC  systems, properly maintained and used, can reduce the spread of COVID-19. In other words, these vital systems in buildings and private homes in the country not only provide thermal comfort but can also enhance the fight against the spread of the most important infection in recent years. Even the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) echo these findings and affirm employers can reduce the spread of COVID-19 by maintaining a healthy work environment "by carrying out technical checks and using the ventilation system."

Following this latest development, we can conclude that the HVAC system alone is not enough to protect against COVID-19. However, when it's used with CDC recommended best practices, operating the air conditioner can be part of a defense plan, because it filters the air as it circulates. Here are a few recommendations that may help:

  • Run the system fan longer: many HVAC systems filter the air only when the fan runs; most systems can be set to run the fan even when the heating or air conditioning is not on. Note that this measure may result in higher energy bills and increased wear on your system, but it will increase circulation and filtration of your indoor air.
  • Confirm that the filter is fitted correctly, and consider upgrading the filter by replacing it with a higher efficiency filter or with the highest-rated filter that can fit the fan and filter slot in your system. Many home HVAC systems have a MERV-8 filter installed by default. By replacing it with a MERV-13 or higher rated filter, you could help improve system efficiency in removing viruses from circulating air.
  • Though it's not very common to have one in the home, if your HVAC has an outside air intake, open it to improve rapid air circulation. More commonly, you can open the windows and doors periodically. Do this in moderation, as it will result in higher energy consumption and increased wear on your system.

These general tips work for many homes, but your situation and results may vary. Always remember, before making any changes to your home’s heating or cooling, check your HVAC system manual for details, or better yet, contact us for professional advice on your specific situation.  Comfort Air has been Tampa’s trusted local HVAC specialist for over 25 years.
