Preparing your furnace and HVAC system for winter

Winters are short, cool, windy, and partially cloudy, so they are quite gentle when compared to the snowy and hostile winters that are experienced in other states. This cool season lasts about 3 months and the average daily maximum temperature is less than 75°F. The coldest day of the year is January 18, with an average minimum temperature of 52°F and an average maximum of 70°F.

Clean Your Heating Ducts

Your HVAC system’s heating ducts should be cleaned periodically to allow efficient heating and provide fresh, clean air. Be sure to routinely inspect your heating ducts for punctures, dents or disconnected parts or mold growth. While you may be able to inspect your ducts on your own, if it’s difficult or you don’t know what to look for, consider hiring an HVAC professional.

Change Your Filter

Sometimes the only maintenance that needs to be done is to replace an old filter. When purchasing a new one, consider a reusable filter. These can be rinsed and reused like new. Be sure to replace or clean your filter every month during the months of heavy use, for optimal efficiency and safety.

Invest in a Programmable Thermostat

Keep costs down by setting a programmable thermostat for your HVAC system. This prevents the constant fluctuation and fidgeting with the temperature that could be costing you money, month after month. A programmable thermostat gives you the option of finding the perfect temperature for your personal preferences, setting it, and forgetting about it! Besides, it costs less money in utility costs than when you are constantly adjusting the thermostat.
